[edit] 1 ABOUT THIS GUIDE
This guide is not comprehensive. It directs users to pertinent reference books, circulating books, and databases available at Bentley. It also includes selected Internet resources.
If you need more information than is provided below, please Ask a Librarian.
Different types of resources and access levels:
- Print Resources
are located in the Library`s Reference Collection or behind the Reference Desk. These materials are for in library use only.
- Electronic Resources
are subscription databases. These resources are available to members of the Bentley Community on-campus. Off-campus access is available by using your Bentley e-mail address and network password.
- Websites
are Internet resources that are free.
[edit] 2 FINDING ATLASES USING THE BENTLEY CATALOG
To find atlases about a particular topic, go to the Bentley Library home page
- Click on the <Find Books/DVDs> in the gray search box.
- Do an <Advanced Search>
- After <Any Field>, type in the search box the topic you want.
- Use "and" as a connector.
- On the next line select the <Subject> field from the drop-down box.
- Enter "atlases" in the search box.
- Use "or" as a connector.
- On the next line select the <Subject> field from the drop-down box.
- Enter "atlases" in the search box.
- Sort by date.
- Click the <Submit> button.

- Very comprehensive.
- On one page are forms to map a street address, give driving directions, map a country or city, show a map by latitude or longitude, and provide a topographic map.
- National Geographic's interactive maps of the world.

- A highly regarded collection of online maps.
- Be sure to check the sections FAQ and Other Map Sites.

American Geological Society Library: Cartographic Collection
- Includes major national topographic series, navagition charts and numerous thematic maps.
- "This is an atlas of maps and graphic representations of the geographies of the new electronic territories of the Internet, the World-Wide Web and other emerging Cyberspaces" -- Web site
Britannica Online: World Atlas
- This is an electronic resource available through Bentley Library's homepage
- On the left side of the Britannica homepage, look under research tools.
Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative
- "An international project to develop and distribute digital data on historical and archaeological resources." -- Web site
Ethnologue: Country Index -- Languages
- Maps showing what languages are spoken in specific countries or regions of countries.
- Includes views from space, various topographic maps, maps of ocean currents, glaciers, rivers, earthquakes, etc.
- "A unique feature is the ability to create a customized 'My Favorites' file to view selected images as a slide show or side by side for comparison, or to create HTML pages." -- Choice Reviews 1/05
United Nations Atlas of the Oceans
- This Internet portal provides extensive information about ocean issues.
- One can quickly obtain a very basic map of each country.
- Clicking "reference maps" pulls up a few regional and other maps.
- Produced by the CIA, this is the U.S. government's geographical handbook.
[edit] 4.3 Massachusetts Atlases
Boston Redevelopment Authority: Maps/Aerial Photographs
- This includes the Boston Atlas which presents data from agencies, e.g. the Assessing Department.
- "Information such as building footprints, planning areas, land parcels, and streets can be combined with aerial photography and historical maps to make custom maps." -- Web site
- After the installation of a plug-in, information can be studied in 3-D.
- The Boston Atlas also provides information from neighboring towns and the state.
Massachusetts Geographic Information System -- MassGIS
- This is provided by the Commonwealth's Office of Geographic and Environmental Information.
- It is the official state agency assigned to collect, store disseminate geographic data.

Color Landform Atlas of the United States
- Organized by state.
- A variety of maps are available including relief maps, topographic maps optimized to show landforms, satellite images, and county maps.
Map Collections: American Memory
- This is "an exceptional tool to access high-quality map images. . . Many of these maps are not available for viewing except through this site." -- Choice Reviews Sup '06
- From the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
- Aerial photographs and topographic maps organized by state.
- Searchable by clicking on a map, entering a placename, or selecting a site on the Famous Places page.
- An interactive atlas of the United States
- Displays geographical locations in a series of map layers, e.g. federal lands, urban areas, water features, parkways, rivers, railroads, roads, airports, and geological events.
- Includes several dynamic maps, e.g. relief and elevation, vegetation growth.
- Contains a National Atlas Map Maker which allows users to assemble, view, and print or download maps.
Starting the Hunt: Guide to Mostly On-Line and Mostly Free U.S. Geospatial and Attribute Data
- Resources are arranged in the two major categories of state and national data.
